Well, If you read Worm's book you would see that you used to be able to "ping" someone by typing (or writing a script to) type ping ###.###.###.###:##### and it would mess up their connection. Now, IP's are as good as street adresses. You can also use them to match people up with things they have done on your website.
To find their adress, 'http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm'
(I am reluctant to pust any links because the internet is constantly changing [hehe])
Note: IP's are not reliable because one coule use a Java Rerouter:
http://btunnel.com
or they could use a proxy:
http://www.samair.ru/proxy/
SO, IP's are kinda useless sometimes...

Pigning wont do anything, your computer does it alot on its own, every time you load a website for example. To disrupt someones connection with ping, you have to send millions of ping requests every second. Look up a DoS attack (denial of service)

the ping of death isn't simply pinging someone, it requires sending specially crafted pings (usually via an exploit) to cause an overflow of information.. i probably should have explained that better. anyway that doesn't really work anymore, unless your target is using a retarded isp.
either way an ip can be very useful. if you know what you're doing you could potentially take over that machine. you could make a pretty good geographical guess at their location. you could find out what isp they're using and report them for bad behavior (such as spamming). there are a lot of possibilities. like maus said, under the right circumstances it's just as good as a street address.

"specially crafted pings"
is that secret 1337 worm speak? i prefer just to simply call them large packets.
the ping of death is pretty pointless on newer computers. if you find an old computer, you could lag it to death. it also pointless most days because any decent firewall is going to help blocks pings.
oo and to add on to...your ip address is like your street address...your ping is like the knocking on the door of the house. any good geek doesnt answer their door when it knocks. its always the FBI trying to get your information. :)
